NATIONAL CONSULTATIONS
Inquiry into Human Rights
Trevor Philips, Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, has announced an independent inquiry into human rights in Britain. The inquiry was prompted by a poll the Commission conducted that found that the term "human rights" was not understood by a large proportion of the British public.
Currently the Commission is calling for evidence for the inquiry from individuals, organisations and service providers. They want to find out whether public authorities, such as schools, hospitals or local councils, treat people in line with the legal requirements of the Human Rights Act. A useful briefing that explains the type of issues covered by the human rights act is available on the British Institute of Human Rights' website.
Interested VCS organisations should download a feedback form from the Commission's website and use the opportunity to raise any concerns they have about:
- abuses of the human rights of their members when using other services;
- abuses of the Human Rights Act by public bodies; or
- concerns about the way the present funding climate is affecting organisations' ability to treat people in line with the Act.
The deadline for evidence is 21st June 2008.
Places and the Built Environment
Urban Forum is conducting a survey to find out about what access people have to shops and facilities in their local area, what effect urban design has on wellbeing and, finally, how involved and how much say people have over decisions affecting their local area
This survey is a part of a bigger piece of research which explores community involvement in decision-making around the local built environment.
To fill in the short questionnaire please follow this link to Survey Monkey.
The questionnaire should not take more than 15 minutes to fill out. All responses will be treated in confidence. If you have any questions about the survey, please email: consultation@urbanforum.org.uk.
The deadline is 23 May 2008.
