Gender equality
Introduction
The Gender Equality Duty (2006)
The Equality Act 2006 amended the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 and introduced an Equality Duty on public authorities when carrying out their functions to ensure services, practices and policies are developed with the different needs of men and women in mind.
This involves eliminating unlawful discrimination and harassment, and promoting equal opportunity between men and women.
It also includes a requirement to pay due regard to the elimination of unlawful sex discrimination and harassment in relation to transsexual people.
Institutions in England are required to have a Gender Equality Scheme and in the development of their scheme they are required to consider the need to include objectives to address the causes of any gender pay gap.
