We are particularly interested in hearing from men who would like to volunteer 1:1 (we do have women as volunteers but teenage boys are not usually matched with young women). It would also be possible to volunteer with a friend, partner or the whole of your family (sometimes it works well to include the disabled young person with your own family activities).

Porents is a large community art installation taking place on College Green from Saturday the 18th through to Sunday the 26th September. We are looking for volunteer stewards to meet members of the public, answer questions about the project and man the entry and exit areas. Stewards are needed from 9am until 6pm, any time offered will be greatly appreciated!

Description:

Portents is a city-wide project in partnership with the Pierian Centre and John Easterby. This project will see the transformation of one of Bristol’s most famous public spaces into an extraordinary ‘tent city’. For a period of 10 days from Saturday September 18th – Sunday September 26th , over fifty tents, printed with artwork by the people of Bristol will stand in College Green as united testament to the diversity of the population of the city. Seen around the world, the ‘tent city‘ symbolises sanctuary and security - often from conflict or crisis. This tent city will acknowledge the many people around the world who have been forced into refugee status and act as a metaphor and statement of Bristol’s rich cultural diversity. When the project is complete, artwork from fifty different communities, districts, schools and marginalised, disadvantaged or excluded groups will be presented as one, in a huge public installation that will be seen by people in their hundreds of thousands. The theme of this project is ‘Home, Histories and Hope’ and with one or all of these words in mind we invite individuals or groups to consider their own realities and experiences.

Artists First is a group of 15 disabled visual artists with learning difficulties based in Bristol. We have been working together since 1988; we are used to running our own studios and have organised, or have been part of many exhibitions, residencies and open studio events across the south west and nationally. We believe that as a group we can support each other and that we can do powerful work together, things that we could not do alone. Since 2005 we have been working to re-establish ourselves in the Bristol North area where most of us live. We are working towards getting our own studio and gallery; as part of that journey we are making new work for exhibitions so people can see who we are and what we do. We also plan to work with disabled and non-disabled young people who attend local schools and with other disabled people in the area. Our Board of Trustees seek the skills of an individual who will act in the role of treasurer to monitor the financial matters of Artists First and report to the board of trustees at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation, in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements. As well as their formal reporting and regulatory role, it is important to us that our treasurer knows our artist members and respects them and their work. All trustees act on behalf of the members of Artists First to help to develop the organisation as the artists want to see it grow. KYHP runs two training flats for care leavers. Each resident stays for a total for 9 weeks during which they receive training sessions in cooking, cleaning, budgeting and housing options. Care leavers are also given support around living alone and the emotional issues associated with independent living. The purpose of the training flats is to better prepare care leavers for independent living. The worker will manage the waiting list, they would plan and provide sessions together with some back up from present staff at KYHP. They would arrange planning meeting before each stay and assessment meetings after each stay. The worker would be expected to arrange meetings with social workers and foster carers and liaise closely with the Children's Department and specifically Looked After Team social workers. The SPACE Trust is a small local charity working to support families who have been homeless or threatened with homelessness as they start to rebuild a home. Our primary activity is the collection of quality used furniture from residential homes around the city and the delivery of this furniture to people in need. We are looking for a group of volunteers to join our team here at Tyntesfield. An opportunity to be part of a new project recording local people's stories. We are recruiting for volunteers in two roles, Tyntesfield Stories Volunteer (Information) and Tyntesfield Stories Volunteer (Digital Media). These volunteers will be part of a team to record local people's stories about Tyntesfield and make them accessible to the public. Full training will be provided including filming, editing, interview skills and using databases. The digital media volunteers will work with other Tyntesfield Stories volunteers to film and edit new oral history recordings and to support the uploading of clips to the Tyntesfield Stories website. The information volunteers will keep Tyntesfield’s records of local people’s stories up to date and support the recording of new oral history recordings. They will also support researchers and students looking for information about Tyntesfield’s stories through supporting access to the available information. Youth Moves is the lead organisation for youth work in the wards of Knowle, Filwood, Hengrove and Windmill Hill, is based at The Park and delivers open access youth club sessions, detached street-based work, work in schools and alternative education provision and specific project work focussing on target groups or issues young people may face growing up. BCSW runs national services based in Bristol supporting girls and women affected by self-injury. We are recruiting volunteers for both our helpline and our user friendly computer based text and email support service (TESS). The philosophy on both services is confidential person centered emotional support and we have found all mediums of phone, text and email to be very affective in offering this. Both posts offer comprehensive, experiential training covering affective communication skills, and looking at various issues including working with people who self-injure, what is mental health and sexual abuse. The experience of working on these services is found by many of our volunteers to be extremely satisfying and rewarding and gives a solid foundation into this type of work.

Tea & Talk Befriending Scheme

LinkAge is developing schemes to try to combat the isolation of older people in the community. One of these schemes is our Tea & Talk Befriending scheme which finds people of all ages (over 18yrs) to provide companionship to an elderly and isolated person. We are particularly interested in finding people over 50 years, or retired people to be part of our scheme. We welcome people who can sit and talk with an older person on a weekly basis, perhaps accompany them to shopping or a social activity. The befriender needs to be a good listener, understanding and considerate. It is essential they are reliable and comfortable meeting the older person in their home. It is advantageous for the befriender to have a car, but not vital. LinkAge befrienders are supported by the volunteer coordinator. We undertake a CRB check and provide an introductory briefing for our volunteers. We also organise small socials for our team.

Description:

Take part in a new event for Bristol. Bristol Green Doors is a pilot event supported by the Energy Saving Trust showcasing home refurbishments and ways of living that can make our homes warmer and less energy consuming. Home owners, supported by volunteers, will open their homes and share their experiences with the public on the weekend of 11th/12th September. The weekend will educate, inspire, enable and motivate people to make changes to their own homes and the way they use them to move towards greater energy efficiency, self sufficiency and comfort. The weekend will feature clusters of homes in neighbourhoods centred around hubs such as community centres. These hubs will support the event before, during and after with publicity, displays, energy advice and workshops so providing a stimulating and local context. Open homes and hubs will be dotted across the Bristol area. Volunteers will be teamed up with householders or in hubs in an area as close to them as possible. Imayla is a small Community Interest Company that facilitates recreation and learning through participatory arts and environmental activities. We offer specific programmes of activity or we work with clients to design programmes to meet their needs. Working in an intercultural context and often in the natural environment we help people get away from it all to learn in new places and in new ways and make connections across cultural, artistic and physical divides. Could you support our Older People's Lunch Club team in our small, friendly, user-centred lunch club. Here at Brislington Neighbourhood Centre we provide 3 lunch clubs a week, managed by our Lunch club project manager, delivered by a willing team of helpful volunteers who prepare and serve lunch, supported by others who accompany the older people on the transport and provide engaging activities with the group whilst they are with them. We are currently looking for someone to be lead cook for our Wednesday lunch club that serves approximately 12 people each week.

Description:

We are looking for someone friendly and kind who can be a positive part of our lunch club team here, working with a mix of people, in particular able to work with people from a low-risk mental health background as we try to encourage their volunteering. Only basic cooking skills are necessary but a willingness to do the food hygiene training is essential (if you haven't completed it before, we will pay for this) and willingness to work with team members and older people in planning the menu. You will need to follow our food hygiene guidelines and be prepared to be flexible in a house style kitchen. We are also looking for support cooks for Tuesday and Thursday if you are interested.

Labour Behind the Label (LBL) supports garment workers' efforts worldwide to improve their working conditions. We are looking for people to join our human resource committee. The HR committee co-ordinate all matters relating to HR (recruitment, training and development, HR policies and procedures, staffing structure, contracts, employment law) and ensure staff retention and development. Bristol Disability Equality Forum is looking for Disabled people interested in volunteering in a number of different ways. We are an organisation of Disabled people (and other Disabled people-led organisations) that campaigns on disability equality issues, advises the statutory sector on how to improve their services and ensures Disabled people are consulted on all issues affecting them. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in Bristol. We are in the process of setting up as an unincorporated organisation and developing a consortium of grassroots equalities groups. As part of this we are looking for people with a range of skills to join us in developing our organisation and achieving exciting ambitions. The Midwives Information & Resource Service publishes the Midwifery Digest (a leading midwifery journal) and delivers up to date midwifery related information to a professional and consumer audience via an extensive database and other leading publications. The organisation employees 20 members of staff and has a turnover of approximately £1m. The role of the Treasurer is to maintain an overview of the organisation’s financial affairs by communicating with key members of staff to advise the Board on financial matters that should be brought to its attention, and to inform and advise the Board on its financial stewardship responsibilities. The Treasurer will ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained in compliance with the Companies Act and the Charities Act. The ideal candidate will have a background in accountancy, preferably within the charity or not-for profit sector and will have a commitment to the aims of MIDIRS. This is a voluntary position but travel and subsistence expenses may be reclaimed. The board of trustees meets four times a year in Bristol but remote electronic attendance is possible. This equates to approximately 16 hours per annum in total but ad-hoc involvement may also be required when reviewing management accounts and policy documents via e-mail.

We are actively seeking new members from amongst the business community as well as the Early Years and Playwork sectors to assist the organisations development through this exciting period. The organisation has always had a key role in assisting the development of new training initiatives in play and childcare in Bristol and the surrounding areas. These developments have led to the establishment of a highly skilled and extremely dedicated staff team to support the Unit’s work. We are now at an exciting time in PEYTU’s development. The Early Years & Childcare Service has diverging priorities and the organisation is currently developing as an independent player in the Early Years and Playwork sector in Bristol and the surrounding areas. There is a need to build on the work that has already been done to develop new and innovative programmes and to continue to increase general access to training.
