Streets Alive!
Who are you?
A Bristol-based independent group supporting residents to organise street parties and neighbourhood festivals. Support after events to follow up any issues they want raised, including green travel modes, especially car share with neighbours and cycle training.
When and why did you start up?
Set up 2 years ago to make Bristol into a street party city.
Describe your organisation in three words.
Traffic free fun!
If your group rules the world, what would be your first act as world leaders?
Obligatory parties in the streets, and neighbours would have to talk to each other - they like it really!
What is your most memorable achievement?
When neighbours talk for the first time. Also our city centre car-free event on one day every September.
Do you belong to any partnerships?
Voscur Transport Network. Also working in partnership with residents and local artists who transform the streets.
Who are your funders?
New Opportunities Fund SEED Programme, Bristol City Council, Arts Council, small foundations and trusts.
What do you get out of being a member of Voscur?
Networking and information, so far. We're new!
How can we contact you?
We're based at 82 Colston Street, Bristol BS1 5BB. Contact Chris Gittins 922 5708,
email: party@streetsalive.net or visit www.streetsalive.net for the Street Party Guide.
Background Info:
Streets Alive! is about cultural change, where the street is a public space not a car park or through route. We concentrate on events that change that situation and people experience a traffic-free street for one day.
Artists help a lot with this and there are loads of great ones in Bristol. ANYONE CAN JOIN IN WITH THIS. Apart from many volunteers, there are a number of freelance session workers who organise events and advise residents. Would you like to be another one, as we would like to have as many as 20 or even 50 people spreading the word about how easy it is to organise a street party? Also, we offer training to community workers in how to support residents in arranging parties.
Thanks to Streets Alive! for this profile. If your group would like to be profiled in a future Voscur newsletter or on our website, please contact Darron Thevarajah at the Voscur office Tel. 909 9949, or email: darron@voscur.org
