Streets Ahead Festival - Stunning Intercultural Festival for Upper Horfield

An exciting array of arts and entertainment is scheduled to perform at the Streets Ahead Festival in Upper Horfield from 8th-15th March and it's all totally free!!

The packed programme includes theatre and dance devised and performed by local young people; music and procession on the streets; music, food and exhibitions reflecting the many different cultures now living in the area - everything from graffiti and bhangra to hip-hop and morris dancing.

The project is a partnership between acta, Upper Horfield Community Trust and Bristol Community Housing Foundation, and is funded by Arts Council England, Quartet Community Fund, Neighbourhood Renewal and the Youth Opportunities Fund.

'We wanted to do something special to enable members of the community to come together and celebrate the creativity and different cultures in our area', said Maria Damsell, UHCT Community Development Worker, 'We're very excited at the wide range of events we've organised; from storytelling for tots in the local library, youth drama, theatre and dance groups, to a Somalian Tent installed at the Primary School. There's so much to see and do, really something for everyone!'

The Festival is the culmination of a year-long community arts project co-ordinated by acta, aimed at promoting access to the arts and developing understanding between different sections of the community.

"This area has a rich culture, and everyone has something to offer", says Project Co-ordinator Hannah Currant, "We want everyone in the area to come along and enjoy the festival, and celebrate what an amazing community there is here"

The Festival also includes free performances by Banner Theatre from Manchester, and 'An Evening with Big Bill Broonzy', a new play by local playwright Will Grealish, performed by acclaimed actor Okon Ubanga-Jones. Bristol-based international dance group, Kompany Malakhi, have worked with local young people who will present a new dance at the Festival.
