Development Day: Achieving Positive Mental Health & Race Equality through Advocacy

12 May 2008 - 10:00
12 May 2008 - 15:30

Venue: Woburn House, Tavistock Square, London WC1.

This is a joint initiative between Age Concern's Mental Health & Well-Being Network, the National Minority Ethnic Network, PASSION (Advocacy) Network, together with Age Concern's Mental Capacity Advocacy Project (MCAP), funded by both MCAP (Dept of Health, Section 64) and by Age Concern South East Regional Company.

The day, with a particular focus on the role of advocacy, is aimed at a cross-section of people involved in delivering mental health and well-being related services for and with older people, especially those from Age Concerns, though other organisations will be represented, both to profile what they do and to highlight current developments in their respective fields so as to inform and develop our practice.

Key note speakers confirmed:

John Miles of Older People's Advocacy Alliance
Melba Wilson from Delivering Race Equality National Programme
Lucy Bonnerjea from the Dept of Health
Stephen Burke of Counsel & Care

The Aims of the day are:

  • To share good practice and enhance learning for providers of services to older people with mental health problems.
  • To increase awareness/knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act;
  • To increase awareness/knowledge of the Delivering Race Equality in Mental Health services programme
  • To increase awareness/knowledge of CSIP's Mental Health services programme for Older people;
  • To share ideas/examples of how to develop Age Concern's services and/or support for older people with mental health needs
  • To be a springboard for ongoing collaboration around specific initiatives/service development in the future.
  • We would be delighted if you were able to come and share your experience of providing direct services in the field(s) of mental health & well-being and mental capacity, BME older people and/or advocacy at the event, or if you are thinking of developing such services and would like to know more.

Participation by Network members is FREE, with 50% of the travel costs being refundable upon later presentation of receipts.
