Trafficking in human beings is often viewed as an issue to do with prostitution and affecting small numbers of women from specific countries. Recent research has shown that trafficking actually occurs in a wide range of industries and effects large numbers of people from a large selection of countries.
In this public discussion there will be contributions from Anti-Slavery international, the Gangmaster's licensing authority and from the Irish researcher on the European-wide project on trafficking for forced labour.
This public discussion takes place in the context of a workshop on Global justice, Borders and Migration, organised by the University of the West of England at the Pierian Centre. Esteemed contributors from International Political Theory together with recognised specialists in migration from the UK and other European countries will aim to bring together the insights on global justice and migration to develop multi-disciplinary frameworks for an ethical approach to migration and to sketch public policy implications in this area.
The types of questions addressed will include: is there mileage in discussing open borders? What is a fair migration policy? Does transnationalism create the need for a different perspective on social justice schemes? Does transnationalism create new forms of global citizenship? What implications are the results of the feminisation of migration? What is a just global division of labour? These questions will be interlinked with papers with examples from recent research on a special branch of migration theory on trafficking for forced labour.
The workshop will result in a set of high-quality interrelated papers to be published in a Special Issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies and a section in the Journal of Global Ethics as well as an edited collection for Routledge/Taylor and Francis.
