Developing Yourself as a Team Leader - Leadership & Management Training - The Play & Early Years Training Unit
Course Title: Developing Yourself as a Team Leader
Course Aim: The course aims to examine why leadership is increasingly seen as an important area of development in the early years. As well as how contemporary research on leadership in the early years can help support the development of good practice.
Course Details: This course gives members of the early years workforce an opportunity to develop their understanding and skills of team leadership. It has been designed in response to specific recommendations that staff in the early years workforce be supported to extend their leadership potential. Taught over four evenings, the course is designed to ensure that team leaders in early years settings will find the course accessible as well as relevant.
Participants will be invited to explore their values and beliefs concerning leadership, including the tensions between leadership and management, and the opportunities of distributed leadership. A substantial part of the course will be given over to developing participants’ own leadership vision that can inspire and inform their practice. The qualities and keys skills of effective leaders are analyzed. The role and challenges of leadership when working in partnership with parents, carers and agencies will be examined.
Different strategies that support effective leadership will be shared, including time management, assertiveness, delegation, stress management, conflict resolution and decision making. The challenges of offering effective leadership while managing change are considered. Some time will be given over to reflecting on participants’ own issues and dilemmas as leaders, and it is hoped that the group can facilitate a shared understanding of how effective leadership can work in a variety of different contexts.
