Business on Board

Business on Board is a pilot initiative to help bring business skills to VCS Organisations as well as forge better relations between business and the community. Pride of Place Award winners announced

The first Pride of Place awards celebrating the work of community groups, public and private sector partners working together in their Neighbourhood Partnerships (NP) were announced at an award ceremony in the M Shed on 27 July. Voscur and the Black Development Agency were pleased to sponsor the Stronger Communities Award.

The award recognises the NP that was successfully supporting community involvement, volunteering and working with community organisations. The winner of the Stronger Communities Awards 2011 is Avonmouth and Kingsweston Neighbourhood Partnership.

In the current climate voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations are faced with ever increasing funding demands and have to think creatively about funding their work.

This  training session will help staff or trustees, who have some experience of raising funds, to consider how they can maximise their opportunities for raising funds.

Mary Waters, an Independent Consultant, who has over 10 years' experience supporting VCS organisations with funding will lead this session.

Consultation begins on 'Community Right to Challenge' and 'Community Right to Buy - Assets of Community Value.

The government has launched consultation papers on two significant parts of its 'Big Society' policy agenda.

The Community Right to buy - Assets of Community Value would give community groups 'a fair chance to bid to take over assets and facilities that are important to them'.

The Community Right to Challenge  would give 'community and voluntary bodies, parish councils and authorities employees' the right 'to bid to take over the running of local authority services'.

Bright Sparks: Lloyds Banking Group Social Entrepreneurs Programme: Deadline 28 May!

Applications for Bristol are now open for the Lloyds Banking Group Social Entrepreneurs Programme. If you have an idea for a project or organisation that you would like to establish, or have an existing one that you would like to scale, this programme could make this possible.

The programme will support 150 social entrepreneurs each year, for five years, with comprehensive support from the School for Social Entrepreneurs,  through its innovative ‘action learning’ programmes, plus grants of £4,000 and £15,000 and an annual £25,000 award:

Reaching and Supporting Racially Diverse Communities: Updated Resources

A guide, by national Charity HFT, to meeting the needs of people with learning disabilities and family carers, from newly arrived, Black, Asian and other Minority Ethnic Communities has been newly updated in April of this year.

This resource is aimed at professionals working in Learning Disability, Carers and Mainstream Diversity and Equality Fields, although some information will be of interest to Family Carers too.

‘Red Tape Challenge’ to the Equality Act 2010: Government Announcement

On 15 May 2012 the Home Secretary, Theresa May, announced the outcome of the Equalities ‘Red Tape Challenge’, a drive said to try to cut bureaucracy for businesses and the public sector. As part of the Challenge, members of the public, businesses and industry experts were invited to scrutinise the Equality Act. They put forward recommendations for regulations which could be simplified, scrapped or clarified.

Calling Young Bristol Chefs! Applications Open for Junior Masterchef 2012

CBBC is hosting the competition to find the best young cook in the country as Junior MasterChef returns for 2012.  

The BAFTA-nominated series is back to give some of Britain's best young cooks the chance to follow in the footsteps of 2010 champion, Georgia Bradford, and become Junior MasterChef 2012. The competition will once again aim to find and encourage talented young cooks who have a flair for making exceptional food from scratch.
