A message from the Voscur Chair

Wednesday, 28 March, 2018
Voscur has been through a period of significant change.  You can read more about it in our statement.  But I wanted to say a personal thank you to all of the staff, both those who are staying and those who are leaving us, for all of the hard work they have put over the last years.

Even though the VCSE sector has been under huge pressure in recent years – responding to increased demand with fewer resources – most have managed to survive, some have thrived and a few are at the vanguard of new thinking and ways of working. All are still having an impact on the lives of the most vulnerable in our city.  That is in no small part due to Voscur and the wide range of support the staff team has offered over the years. Many have been helped through crisis situations where funding was running out or key staff were leaving, but Voscur staff have also done the strategic work that means the sector in our city is strong and able to meet the needs of so many residents.

Our BME Voice and Influence work has kept BME issues at the heart of local government and the city and has supported many voices to be strengthened and have influence. Community groups have been given support and training to manage their finances and improve their governance – creating more resilient organisations that can ride the pressures of austerity and funding problems. We have supported organisations to take on buildings to diversify their funding and even start up commercial companies.  Many of the key partnerships across city organisations were brokered by Voscur bringing in new funding to the city.

Our work on the compact and social value means that local organisations have an equal playing field when bidding for contracts and can hold the Council to account and challenge when necessary.  Voscur has additionally been instrumental in maintaining budgets and grants for local charities when they were under threat.

The dedication, contacts, networks and skills of all of our staff are key to these often unheralded successes and, as some depart for pastures new, I would like to say, on behalf of the Board and the sector, a huge thank you to you all for your hard work and commitment to Voscur and to VCSE organisations across the city.
