Freedom of Mind is returning to Bristol and this year is set to be even bigger and better than before. Join us between the 5th and 12th October 2018 where we'll be showcasing a series of events to open discussion and explore emotional wellbeing, creating conversation, education and change. 

 


Adventure and Wellbeing - Friday 5th October, 1:30pm, Watershed

Partnering with Womens adventure Expo, this event will explore how key elements of adventure such as being in a natural environment, stepping outside our comfort zone, dealing with uncertainty and coping with challenges can give moments of awe, build confidence and nurture resilience.

Wellbeing Walk (with dogs!) - Sunday 7th October, 10:30am, The Downs

Calling all dog lovers! Come along for a Sunday stroll featuring some furry friends, all in the name of mental health.

Afternoon Tea Against Lonliness - Monday 8th October, 1:30pm, Vassall Centre

Tea and cake anyone? We’re very excited to be collaborating with LinkAge Network and Marmalade Trust to put on an afternoon tea party for all ages, with older people especially welcome.

Join us as we drink tea to fight loneliness in our communities with the help of LinkAge Network and Marmalade Trust. Bring your mum, dad, grandparents, grandchildren – friends and family alike are welcome!

Film Screening of 'I made this for you' - Monday 8th October, 6:00pm, Watershed

I Made This For You is a last-ditch love letter, all at once sensitive, distressing and uplifting – an ode to friendship and connection which is brought to life by the cast’s brilliant improvisations about real people they knew who had committed suicide or they were worried about. The resulting film is both important and overwhelming, capturing one version of a lost soul.

Spoken word with Raise the Bar - Monday 8th October, 8:00pm, Prince Street Social

Raise The Bar put on Bristol’s biggest spoken word poetry events, showcasing the country’s finest performers and hottest new talent, and we can’t wait to work with them again. Our last event with Raise The Bar sold out, so don’t sleep on this one!

Book Signing with Jonny Benjamin MBE - Tuesday 9th October, 7:30pm, Waterstones

Jonny Benjamin was considering suicide when he was talked out of it by a stranger on a bridge. He then launched the viral “Find ‘Mike'” campaign with the charity Rethink Mental Illness to find this man, and 2 weeks later Johnny was reunited with the stranger, Neil Laybourn. Since then he has launched the ThinkWell initiative to being mental health education into schools, as well as working in India to change attitudes towards mental illness. We’ll delve deep into the topic of mental health with an interview, book signing and Q&A afterwards.

Early morning Silent Disco for World Mental Health day - Wednesday 10th October, 7:00am, Castle Park

We’ll have lots of headphones with lots of different tracks playing from them, so you can take your pic of whatever music is to your taste! There will also be healthy smoothies, tea and coffee for when you need a little rest from dancing, as well as meditation as a calming comedown from the energy of the dance floor. So come along (even if you have two left feet!) and dance with us to celebrate World Mental Health Day!

Body image, food and mental health panel discussion - Wednesday 10th October, 6:45pm, Zion Cafe

What is a healthy attitude towards food? Has modern dieting culture taken things too far? What can we do to promote a positive approach to our body image?
In collaboration with Festival of Ideas, we’ll be hosting a panel discussion where our panelists will exploring relationships between food, body image and mental health, followed by a short Q+A.

Mental health and Homelessness - Thursday 11th October, 7:30pm, Barton Hill Settlement

With the number of rough sleepers on the increase, it is important that we address this issue head on. Examining the link between mental health and homelessness, we’ll be discussing this topic with The Big Issue and other partners to work out what we can do to best tackle homelessness within Bristol.

Boxing for Wellbeing - Friday 12th October, 7:00pm, Empire Fighting Chance

Empire Fighting Chance works with young people to raise their aspirations and self-confidence, knowing that boxing can be a fantastic avenue to healthily channel emotions. We’ll lead off with a brief talk about how sport can impact mental health, before going into some circuit training to get our bodies moving! We’ll then all share a well deserved meal; bring along your favourite dish for us all to try! Whether you’ve tried boxing before, or this is your first time, come along for a fantastic evening of exercise, talks, and community.

Music and Dance taster sessions - Friday 12th October, 7:30pm, Hamilton House

Choose between 3 different activities (singing, drumming or dancing, surprisingly), and become a master in that field as you follow a workshop leader. Take the time to focus on one or try all three! By the end of the evening, the three different activities will be fused together for one beautiful performance. Whether you’re a seasoned performer or an absolute beginner, come and make something wonderful. Expect to have a lot of fun, and enjoy the togetherness and expression that singing, drumming and dancing fosters. All abilities are welcome.
