What is this course about?

This course provides basic information and understanding about good governance for charities, CICs and community groups. It will explain the legal obligations and role and responsibilities for trustees, directors and management committee members. It will also look at the policies needed for organisations with Bristol Impact Fund projects.

We will provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities of people responsible for making decisions in the overall running of organisations, and what it takes to do the role well. Lastly, we will outline the key policies required by Bristol City Council for Bristol Impact Fund projects. 

Who is the course for?

Trustees, CIC directors and management committee members. 

•    This course will assist your organisation in developing your application to the Bristol Impact Fund. 
•    It is designed to help organisations understand and meet the councils baseline standards for Bristol Impact Fund grants.
•    In particular, this course is aimed at smaller organisations who have limited experience and/or capacity and who may not have applied for a council grant previously.

This course is a free course. However it is only available for some organisations who are applying to Bristol City Council for the Bristol Impact Fund. To find out whether your organisation is eligible for a place on this course, please complete our online form and a member of our team will be in contact with you as soon as possible.

What will you learn? 

  • Understand your organisation’s legal structure.
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of board or committee members.
  • Distinguish between the strategic role of the board and the operational role of management or staff.
  • Describe the principles of good governance.
  • Recognise conflicts of interest and potential areas of uncertainty in decision-making, and develop solutions to avoid and/or manage these risks.
  • Identify the key policies and procedures that need to be in place to support good governance.
  • Your legal duties as employers of staff.
  • Financial management procedures.
  • Basic requirements for insurance, data security, health and safety, equalities and discrimination, accountability and involvement.

What else do you need to know?

The type of constitution your organisation has and its legal identity, such as a limited company, Trust, CIC, etc.

Please note the session will be recorded, however discussion sessions involving participants and Zoom images will be edited out of the recording. 

To take part, you will need a laptop with a camera, microphone, and Wi-Fi; you won't need any extra software. You will be emailed an invitation with a link to join the online training before the course.
