UWE Bristol Equity

UWE Bristol Equity, Bristol SU BME Network and MANDEM have teamed up to bring you an important event surrounding mental health.

In the UK rates of depression, anxiety and suicide are on the rise. One in four adults are diagnosed with a mental health issue each year and a record number of children are calling Childline with suicidal thoughts. On top of this, suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45.

In light of this, this event seeks to explore the extent to which these issues can be attributed to our lifestyles and the societal pressures that are compounded by modern society. These worrying figures have occurred against the backdrop of the 2008 financial crisis and the age of austerity.

Considering that people of colour are disproportionately affected by mental health problems in the UK, we will also discuss how race intersects with the mental health crisis.

Evidently, it is paramount for us to build safe spaces to have an open and honest discussion about what we are experiencing, and attempt to come up with real solutions. At this event we will offer a space for accessible discussion and solution-based thinking.

Networking themes will be: race, self-care and masculinity.
