Please help to restore more of Bristol’s historic Sir John’s Wall. If you're 18 or older you can get involved.

At about 3m high and 1m thick, the wall along Sir John’s Lane is a substantial structure. Much of it has been repaired or reconstructed. As part of the Stoke Park Stewardship Scheme we want to restore and complete a further section running along the edge of the lane, including an archway. Together with Ecovigour we seek volunteers to assist with the initial phase of the works. It’s a great way to get some experience and be part of a conservation project.

Two dates are available for volunteers:
1. Thu 21 June, 9am to 3.30pm (break for lunch 12.30-1.00)
2. Tue 26 June , 9am to 3.30pm (break for lunch 12.30-1.00)
You can attend either a morning or afternoon session or the full day.

What to expect:
• Excavation and grading of stone from collapsed sections of the wall into piles ready for reconstruction.
• Removal of vegetation from existing sections of the wall so that they can be assessed for structural stability.
• Cleaning back of the original wall footing to assess it for suitability as a foundation for reconstruction.
• EcoVigour will supply all tools, equipment and work gloves. Volunteers will be briefed on the works to be undertaken and fully supervised. Volunteers will be allocated tasks appropriate to their abilities and experience.

What to do:
• Register to volunteer (see below).
• Bring a packed lunch. (Tea, coffee and biscuits supplied).
• Dress appropriately for the weather conditions and wear stout shoes / boots. Toilets and washing facilities are provided.
• Parking can be found at the Stoke Park Gate at the top of Lindsay Road (BS7 9NP). The meeting point will be EcoVigour’s compound on Sir Johns Lane near the BT Tower.
