Social value is the difference that organisations can make in not just what kind of services they deliver, but how they deliver them. A commercial cafe, for example, may provide a great service, but relatively little social value. A community cafe, by contrast, that does all the things the commercial cafe does, and employs people with learning disabilities, may also provide a great service and create lots of social value via the impact of employing people who often have less opportunity to gain the benefits of a job.

Voscur works with commissioners who design and buy services, and VCSE organisations that would like to deliver services, to help them work together to create the most impact and social value through the delivery of public services.

A report on Bristol City Council’s progress in instilling social value into its commissioning and procurement processes suggests that the City is on track to meeting its targets.

These targets, as set out in the Social Value Policy which was adopted by the Council in April 2016, all contribute to the overarching commitment to ensuring that local economic, social and environmental well-being is taken into consideration when procuring local services.

Social inclusion through positive action

Creating a more equal society requires taking proactive, targeted action - not just 'getting out of the way and letting the market decide.' Such positive action underpins all Voscur's work to support and develop the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector. We are also involved in a number of other initiatives addressing specific barriers to opportunity, and provide training and consultancy for organisations that want to improve their own inclusion and diversity practice.

Voscur has been working in the area of commissioning for many years, both supporting groups to engage directly with commissioning processes, and facilitating a productive dialogue between the sector and local commissioners in order to make these processes as accessible as possible for the widest selection of local groups.

Please note: the event venue has changed to Broadmead Baptist Church.
