The 2017 Celebrating Age Festival moves back to City Hall, Park Street and there is an exciting program of activities lined up in the council chambers and on college green.

This year, the team behind the festival has focused on physical activity, with walking football, dance, netball and other sports. The festival kicks off on Saturday 23 September. At 11.15 am there will be a fashion show, 1pm a Teddy Bear’s Picnic for older people and their grandchildren and there is a talk planned on estate planning. These activities are in addition to all of the information, advice and health checks on offer.

Alongside the festival, there is also an art and craft competition and the chance to nominate a local older person for an 'Older Achievers Award'.

CAF Chairman and Age UK Bristol CEO, Mark Baker, says, “The Festival has been going for 10 years now and is an excellent event to engage older people in diverse activities. Bristol is full of people who do not get the recognition they deserve and should be getting an Older Achievers Award. Look at the people you work with, people who volunteer and people who keep things going and tell us about them.”

Isobel Jones, Business Development Manager for Alive! says, “If you know someone helping people live a richer and more fulfilling life – nominate them.”

The five categories of Award are:

  • Sports and Physical Activity - this could be a sports player, coach or dancer.
  • Caring Award - for someone who looks after another.
  • Challenge - for the person who has overcome illness, shown bravery or risen beyond expectations.
  • Community - a volunteer or charity worker.
  • Group – an older person's group that 'enhance lives'.

The three winners of the art and craft competition and the five Older Achievers will be announced at the opening ceremony on Saturday, 23 September 2017 at 10.30am. Nomination forms can be obtained from and should be returned to: Shelley Hankins, Services Manager, Age UK Bristol, Canningford House, 38 Victoria Street, Bristol BS1 6BY, email shelleyhankins@ageukbristol.org.uk
