Job Vacancy – Communities Manager

BS3 Community Development is a well-established community anchor organisation in south Bristol - our mission is to improve the health, wellbeing & happiness of the people in the BS3 postcode area of south Bristol.

We are strengthening our team with the addition of a Communities Manager role to support our community development and engagement work.

HOURS: 30 hours per week (work pattern to be agreed)

RATE OF PAY: (F/T = £24,000 per annum; pro rata 30.0 h/ week = £19,208.38 per annum) (£12.28/hour) plus benefits including subsidised childcare & training and development opportunities

REPORTS TO: Head of Communities and Engagement

Main purpose of job

To provide management, direction and first-line supervision to a team of four to eight community development team members. (This number will vary depending on grants and projects). Oversee the day-to-day running of the communities’ work-streams working towards an agreed community development plan - to ensure high quality relevant and meaningful groups and services are developed with and within our community, delivered within budget and meeting the needs of the community. 

Key Responsibilities

To lead the team and support and facilitate the development of an ABCD (asset-based community development) approach:

  • Using a co-produced methodology between agencies and our residents.
  • Leading by example, demonstrating fair, respectful, trusting, supportive and constructive relationships and highly effective communication with people.

To support the team to be person-centred and approachable:

  • Focusing on the delivery and growth of an inclusive, interesting, active and varied programme of services for people developed in response to identified local need.
  • Maintaining a hands-on, problem solving, active and engaged management style.
  • Identifying evidence and utilising information about the needs and opinions of people in the community, including existing research and local information, and supporting people from our community to be an active part of that evidence gathering.
  • Networking with decision makers, influencers and providers to encourage the required and desired services and activities in our community.
  • Ensuring residents rights, equality, inclusion and anti-discriminatory practice are reflected in all aspects of delivery.

To be an active and dedicated member of the charities’ Operational Working Group:

  • Working closely with other managers (and others) to ensure that services are aligned and that departments are working towards the same goals to best meet the needs of the community and the organisation.
  • Ensuring systems and communications are consistent, organised and efficient and compliant with the charity’s policies and procedures.

To deputise for Head of Communities & Engagement where needed:

  • At meetings/ events, (with health care providers, community partners, local authorities, etc – anything to do with our community development work).
  • Ensuring key points are accurately captured and fed back plus any required actions highlighted/ next steps understood.

To support the collation of monthly metrics; qualitative, quantitative and anecdotal, for all groups and activities and feed into funding applications:

  • Developing monitoring and evaluation processes to gather and report on statistics, consultation outcomes, feedback and impact monitoring data.
  • Researching and providing specific data relevant to funding applications.
  • Ensuring funds awarded are used as agreed, results are measured and reporting is accurate.

  • Supporting communications in order to ensure the development of efficient and effective practices, services and activities which are required/ desired by our residents are accessible to them.

Essential Skills

Evidence of professional development related to community development

A good understanding of safeguarding and experience of interacting with all age groups

Some computer-based experience and a willingness to learn new systems.

Line-management experience and ability to demonstrate leadership, motivational practices and organisational skills

Previous experience of supporting, delivering and developing in-community services – setting-up and running community groups, booking venues, promotion, etc

Knowledge and understanding of community and social issues and the wider provision of services for communities

Desirable Skills

Holds current first aid and DBS certificates

Understands the importance of the wider determinants of health and a holistic approach to wellbeing

Understands and has undertaken work using a co-production methodology

Some experience or understanding of managing budgets and working with grant-funded projects

Experience and success in applying for grants

Knowledge and understanding of legislation and guidance related to working with different communities

An understanding of the various organisations, networks, initiatives and other issues related to residents of South Bristol, Bristol and beyond
