Details of Role: 

Responsibility:  To ensure that Lifeskills – Learning for Living complies with all legal/financial requirements under both Company and Charity Law. The overall role of the Treasurer is to:

  • Maintain an overview of Lifeskills financial affairs
  • Ensure Lifeskills financial viability
  • Ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained

General responsibilities as a Director/Trustee:   

  • To ensure that Lifeskills complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
  • To ensure that Lifeskills pursues its objects as defined in its governing document
  • To ensure that Lifeskills applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects (Lifeskills must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objects, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are)

In addition to the above statutory duties, each Director/Trustee should use any specific individual skills, knowledge or experience that they have to help the Directors Board reach sound decisions. 

Additional duties of the Treasurer:

  • Overseeing and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements and advising the Board on these
  • Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place
  • Advising on the financial implications of Lifeskills strategic plans
  • Ensuring that the accounts are scrutinised in the manner required and that any recommendations are implemented

Person Specification

  • A strategic thinker, able to participate in Director/Trustee decision making on how to use the limited resources of Lifeskills to maximum effect
  • A commitment to Lifeskills
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of charity trusteeship
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

Financial qualifications and experience

  • Some experience of charity finance and fundraising
  • The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences
  • Willingness to be available to staff and volunteers for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis
