Project Background

Parks have a crucial role to play in supporting community health and wellbeing and they have huge potential to respond to the climate and ecological emergencies in our cities. Hillfields Community Garden has made a massive impact in the local area since the project started in 2019. We have planted over 300 trees in the park, we have an orchard, a wildflower area, a bug hotel and 8 raised beds growing fruit, flowers, herbs and vegetables. We have big plans for next year and we are now looking to grow our team. We have a regular programme of events and groups, last year we ran a spring and a summer event involving entertainment, music and kids activities. Each one was a great success and they were both very well received by the community. By expanding our team we can make these events even bigger and better next year!

We are a core team of approximately 10 people, most of us have families, jobs and busy lives so it’s important to us that the work we do is fun and social. We have monthly team meetings and quarterly socials.

The Role

We are looking for Event Volunteers who can help us with the planning and organisation of our community events. We need dedicated people who are passionate about bringing people together and celebrating our wonderful community.

Volunteering at events will work around your commitments. You can choose to be involved in the ideas process and planning of the event, you could take responsibility for a particular area of an event (fundraising, marketing, planning etc) or just show up on the day and help with stewarding or staffing a stall. We are really open to hearing your ideas and we welcome people who would like to perform, run a workshop or put on their own event. All ages are welcome as long as they are supervised by an adult.

Hillfields Community Garden is a much-needed project in the area, running events for our community will be a rewarding role for the right person.

Being an events volunteer could involve:

  • Working as part of a team to plan and implement a programme of events throughout the year.
  • Helping with the admin associated with running events; applying for licences, booking entertainment, liaising with other community groups.
  • Sharing promotional posters/leaflets both on social media and also in the wider community.
  • Stewarding on the day of the event and ensuring we adhere to health and safety regulations.
  • Leading a workshop, staffing a stall or setting up activities.
  • Designing decorations, putting up bunting and creating a colourful and unforgettable event.
  • Working in partnership with the wider team, attending monthly team meetings and attending groups and events where possible.

You will be…

  • No specific events experience needed as full training will be given.
  • Organised and enthusiastic along with an interest in gardening and building strong communities.
  • Confident using social media accounts, Microsoft Office and ideally Google Drive.
  • A team player, keen to help make the project a success.

We will provide…

  • Ideas and encouragement from a supportive team.
  • The chance to make a difference to the local community.
  • The chance to meet new people and make friends.
  • An opportunity to gain event experience which can be included on your CV.

Look at our website and Facebook for more info about the project.
