Can you spare a few hours every two months to support our service user group to create an informative, supportive and social environment?

Milestones Trust is a health and social care charity which supports people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and people living with dementia. The services are provided through a network of residential and nursing care homes throughout the Bristol and South Gloucestershire areas.

The service user group is a support, information and social group for people with a learning disability who access Milestones Trust's services. Although the group is aimed at the learning disabled community, it is open to all service users. It is ran by the Involvement Coordinator, and due to the group growing in size they would like a volunteer to help with facilitating activities, discussions and games.

The role will also involve working with the Involvement Coordinator to plan activities a month before the meeting, setting up 30 minutes before it starts and helping to tidy up for 30 minutes after the event.

The volunteer will need to be available for the meetings stated below through 2017 and 2018:

  • Monday 4th December (9am – 1pm)
  • Monday 12th February (1pm – 5pm)
  • Tuesday 10th April (9am – 1pm)
  • Wednesday 13th June  (1pm – 5pm)
  • Monday 22nd October  (9am – 1pm)
  • Tuesday 4th December (1pm – 5pm)

There will be an additional session in August – date to be confirmed.

Admin and planning time up to 4 hours in advance of each session (to be agreed on a flexible basis with the Involvement Coordinator). Each meeting is themed around a topic, which include things like; health and well-being, friendships and relationships, voting, advocacy, staying safe, money etc.

The outcomes for people pertain to:

  • Increased knowledge and understanding of key issues
  • Signposting to other services for support in the community
  • Having a voice and a say in the organisation
  • Socialising, friendship and enjoyment 
  • Independent living skills

The personal attributes of a volunteer that would benefit the group are:

  • Reliable
  • Self-motivated 
  • Flexible and dynamic
  • Ideas and enthusiasm
  • Interest/understanding of the needs of someone with a learning disability, or a willingness to learn
  • Approachable
  • Confident
  • Basic admin skills- emailing, telephone
