Treasurer Needed for a Mental Health and Wellbeing Charity

We are looking for an enthusiastic, hands-on Treasurer, who is excited about using traditional craft skills to help decrease social isolation and aid in the recovery, training and therapy of a wide variety of vulnerable individuals.

What will you be doing?

The Woodworks Project was set up to help those who have faced difficulties through their mental or physical health or who have a history of addiction. By working collaboratively with the highly trained craftsmen, The Woodworks Project helps its clients to empower themselves enabling vulnerable individuals to move forward in their lives in a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment.

As the charity's Treasurer, you will take the lead on:

  • making sure the charity keeps proper accounts;
  • reviewing the charity's financial performance;
  • drawing up or reviewing policies for finance and investment;
  • ensuring that the charity has robust and effective financial controls in place; and
  • liaising with finance staff and the charity's independent examiner or auditor.

In addition, in reviewing the charity's financial performance, the Treasurer is expected to liaise with the Woodworks Project's management team to identify the material aspects of the accounts and report back to the Board at each meeting so that the Board is well informed to be able to make key decisions; assist the rest of the Board to gain a minimum understanding of the accounts; and work with the Charity's and the management team to draft and oversee governance documents including financial control policies.

The Treasurer will join the Trustee Board in continuing to support the Woodworks Project in implementing its 3-year Business Plan, as well as providing strategic guidance and advice to the senior staff.

As a trustee, the Treasurer's duties also include:

  • Offer advice and guidance to the senior staff;
  • Ensure the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit;
  • Comply with the charity’s governing document and the law;
  • Act in the charity’s best interests;

With your co-trustees, make balanced and adequately informed decisions, thinking about the long term as well as the short term;

  • Manage the charity’s resources responsibly;
  • Must use reasonable care and skill, making use of your skills and experience and taking appropriate advice when necessary;
  • Should give enough time, thought and energy to your role, for example by preparing for, attending and actively participating in all trustees’ meetings; and
  • Ensure the charity is accountable.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking an experienced Treasurer, with a background in Finance and ideally, accounting. The right candidate will be an excellent communicator, organised and prepared to be hands-on with the organisation.

The right candidate will be someone who will enjoy the flat-hierarchy and the challenges of creating a new type of organisation, working collaboratively with the staff and founders to develop and implement the organisation’s next three year plan.

Trustees should ideally have a common sense approach, understanding the limitations of a small organisation whilst cultivating an ambitious but realistic strategy. A local knowledge and network with businesses and/or charities within Bath would also be greatly desirable.

Preferably, but not a necessity, candidates will have an interest in traditional trade-skills, especially upholstery or cabinet making.

Ideally, trustees will be based in or near Bath, however, the organisation is very much open to applications from further afield and is willing to adopt Skype or teleconferencing for the right person.

What difference will you make?

The Board of Trustees has been heavily impacted by the resignation of its previous Treasurer, which has left a gap in the skill-set within the Board. The current Board of Trustees is a relatively new team, but enthusiastic and driven to helping the Woodworks Project to achieve its three year targets, and beyond. The organisation recognises that it needs to widen the skill-set on the Board, as well as replace the previous Treasurer. As such, joining the board will have a huge impact on the organisation and, by extension, its many beneficiaries. You will have the opportunity to guide and influence the financial strategy of the organisation, as well as support the Board of Trustees in making robust strategic decisions from the ground up.

This is a very hands-on Board of Trustees, and consequently, the Treasurer has the opportunity to make a real difference to the sustainability of a small charity.

What's in it for the volunteer?

This is an opportunity to work with an organisation which assists a huge variety of vulnerable individuals. You will play a key role in growing the organisation so that many more can benefit from the peace of mind, the training, the confidence and the satisfaction cultivated through learning and practicing traditional trade skills. You will work with a passionate and friendly team who love what they do and who are committed to their trades and to the vulnerable people they work with. In particular, the Treasurer will have the opportunity to guide and influence the organisation's financial strategy, policies and procedures from Day 1.

A few more details

The Woodworks Project is going through a considerable period of transition; as such the Treasurer needs to be prepared to be hands-on with the organisation. Currently, the Trustees meet bi-monthly and there are a number of work streams underway, including new premises development, staffing restructures and income generation projects. The Treasurer will need to be prepared to have at least a working knowledge of the various work streams.

Closing Date:
Thursday, 28 February, 2019 - 23:00
How to Apply:

Application is by CV and cover letter which should state why you wish to work with the organisation, how your skills would add value to the board and any other relevant information.
