Details of Role: 

Nature Works is a project focusing on engaging young people in a range of nature-based therapeutic practices run by OTR, and working with a number of partner organisations such as Wild Place, Cultivate and St Werburghs City Farm. This includes conservation, nature connection and horticultural therapy. We are looking for volunteers for the following projects:

New Roots Garden

A relaxed weekly after-school group for 13 year olds and above, run as a drop-in on Tuesday evenings 4-7pm and beginning Tuesday 19th March. The sessions will will be hosted at the New Roots Garden, a community garden based in Speedwell which has historically been a space for a number of community groups with a focus on refugees and asylum seekers.

The role will encompass the following:

  • To assist in the provision of weekly after-school horticultural and nature-based therapy sessions
  • Setting up and tidying sessions activities, on-site outdoor kitchen, ensuring tools cleaned and returned to storage
  • Welcome young people into Nature Works and support them to feel included
  • Encourage young people to engage with the activity, role modelling of the activity
  • Engage young people in conversations about their wellbeing
  • Reflective feedback and monitoring after each session and periodically at review meetings, both of young people’s progress and as a team
  • Report any safeguarding concerns to OTR Team Leader

If you have experience supporting young people or feel you could be a positive role model to young people, we’d love to hear from you. We’d ideally like a minimum of 6 months commitment, to ensure both the young people and the volunteers get the most out of the experience. You’ll get experience supporting young people to improve their wellbeing within an established mental health charity and access to OTR training. We will undertake a DBS check.

Nature Works workshops

A range of wellbeing workshops that aim to offer sessions based on creative and wellbeing activities to support young people to try out new things, build their resilience and improve their emotional and physical health. We are looking for volunteers with creative skills (e.g. bushcraft, weaving, clay work, natural building) or wellbeing skills (e.g. meditation, storytelling, journaling) to share these skills with young people.

You will have the support of a member of staff and other volunteers, so the important thing is you bring your skill. Typically, workshops will be hosted alongside our activities at the New Roots Garden and could be stand alone sessions or offered as part of our service for a number of weeks (flexible). We will also be holding one off workshops during school holidays.

You will gain experience of working with young people in a wellbeing setting and be offering young people the chance to try creative/wellbeing activities.
