Do you enjoy working as part of a team, meeting new people and helping put them at ease?

Why we need you?

We are looking for a volunteer to support staff and clients at the start of residential courses by welcoming clients to the centre and helping settle them in. You will need to be friendly, helpful and practical and have good communication skills.

What will I be doing?

This role requires a need to be flexible and adapt to a variety of requirements.

However essentially the role involves:

  • Welcome participants as they arrive and deal with their immediate needs
  • Guide and/assist people to their bedrooms, explain and point out the facilities and help with luggage if required
  • Inform them of evening timetable
  • Help set up group room for the evening session
  • Give a short tour of building
  • Assist practically and participate in the 15 minute evening session
  • Have supper with the group and support the kitchen team
  • Help set up the group room for the later evening relaxation

What training and support can I expect?

You will be given a full induction by the volunteer manager and will also be able to shadow someone in the role and will be given training and support as required. You will also be invited to sit in on an Introduction Day.

What skills will I need?


  • A warm and friendly approach
  • Enjoy making people feel at ease and helping in practical ways
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • The ability to cope easily with the main tasks and responsibilities of the role
  • Have an understanding and appreciation of the values, aims and ethos of the services, with an ability to work within those boundaries.
  • Capable of working in an environment, where the needs of the client shall always be paramount.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and integrity at all times.
  • To be open minded and accepting of others
  • Able to work as part of a team and without direct supervision
  • To have an awareness of the issues that can affect people with cancer  


  • No specific experience or qualifications are needed to work in this role but it is helpful if you have previous experience in a caring or helper role.
  • It is also helpful if you have some knowledge or empathy with the Bristol Whole Person Approach and complementary care.
