Relate Avon is an independent, successful regional charity with offices in Bristol, Bath and Weston super Mare. We are part of the national federation of Relate - the UK's largest provider of relationship support.

We are now looking to recruit a Treasurer to join our Board and support the charity through a period of change.

Key tasks for the immediate future of the charity are to move our Bristol operation to new premises; create a strong organisational, operational and staffing model to underpin our service delivery; and ensure a sustainable income generation strategy.

The overall role of our Treasurer is to:

  • Maintain an overview of the charity's financial affairs
  • Ensure its financial viability
  • Ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.

In addition to the normal duties of a Trustee the Treasurer will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements
  • Being assured that the charity’s financial resources meet its present and future needs
  • Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans
  • Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate reserves policy
  • Ensuring that the charity carries out appropriate risk assessment
  • The preparation and presentation of financial reports to the board
  • Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place
  • Liaising with paid staff and volunteers, in particular the General Manager, about financial matters
  • Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans
  • Ensuring that financial investments are consistent with the aims and objects of Relate Avon
  • Ensuring the charity’s compliance with legislation
  • Ensuring equipment and assets are adequately maintained and insured
  • Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies, ie the Charity Commission and Companies House
  • Ensuring that the accounts are audited or subjected to independent examination as required by law and that any recommendations are implemented
  • Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities
  • Contributing to the charity’s financial strategy and policy including fundraising and client payments
  • Making a formal presentation of the accounts at the Annual General Meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way

Person specification:

In addition to the requirements for all Trustees, a potential Treasurer should have:

  • Financial qualifications and experience
  • Some experience of charity finance, fundraising and pension schemes
  • The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences
  • Preparedness to make unpopular recommendations to the board
  • Willingness to be available to staff for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis
