Organisation background

The Afghanistan & Central Asian Association (ACAA) is a successful frontline Afghan charity set up in 2001 to promote British values and support the integration of disadvantaged and vulnerable refugees, asylum seekers and new arrivals into mainstream British society through the provision of a diverse range of holistic services. Our services include ESOL classes, supplementary school, mentoring, internships and volunteer placements, free community advice and support, women's support groups, social and cultural events, and driving theory classes for women.

The role

An opportunity for someone with a law background/ studying law/ a law graduate to gain experience in working within a community advice clinic, offering support and advocacy to refugees and asylum seekers on immigration, family and housing matters. The position will also involve working alongside solicitors in regular pro bono legal clinics, as well as taking responsibility for the management and overseeing of these. A chance to develop communication skills, build confidence in offering advice and guidance, and gain valuable insight into the logistics of an active charity and the NGO sector.

The role can be flexible in regard to the number of days per week and the length of the placement, however we require a set commitment from each individual in order to ensure the constant management of our services.


Offer advice on a walk-in basis to refugees, asylum seekers and new arrivals to the UK: including but not limited to face to face consultations, the production of supporting documents, support in completing forms and applications.

  • Manage and co-ordinate the running of pro-bono clinics on Family, Housing and Immigration matters. 
  • Maintain contact with existing legal firm partnerships, and actively seek to establish further connections.
  • Document and record all cases through the use of Charity Log database.
  • Promote and advertise the advice services and legal clinics offered by the ACAA.
  • Increase and develop the outreach of the services.

Other opportunities within the charity are also available to legal affairs interns: such as fundraising and involvement in event organisation. 

Essential criteria

  • A background in the legal sector 
  • Working knowledge of basic legal principles
  • Good communication skills 
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in word processing and IT skills
  • Organised and efficient administration skills

Desirable criteria

  • Working knowledge of a second language (ideally Dari, Farsi, Pashto or Arabic)
  • Experience working in an advisory/ advocacy role
  • Experience working in the charity sector
  • Interest in international and current affairs (specifically, regarding the refugee situation)
