Interpreting Volunteer - English and Levantine Arabic (Impact Programme)

Groundwork South
Volunteer Position
Contract Type:
Details of Role:

The aim of the programme is to assist 300 refugees and non-EU migrants in Bristol to integrate into UK society through a programme focusing on 3 key areas:

  • LANGUAGE: conversational English language support will help participants to communicate more easily with UK citizens, and access services.
  • CULTURE: refugees and migrants will take part in community activities alongside UK citizens to promote inter-cultural understanding. Activities will be 'green' and focus on the theme ‘Make & Create’. This may include arts & crafts, food growing, cooking, furniture re-use, etc.
  • PREPARATION FOR WORK: Participants will be offered employability skills training, careers advice and pastoral care via Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG).

Due to Covid-19, our provision is now delivered online. However, we will return to face-to-face delivery when restrictions ease.

We are at the beginning of the IMPACT project and are looking for volunteer interpreters to enable us to support our participants to register and access our programme.

Currently, we are mainly working with Syrian families, so we are looking for volunteers who speak fluently in both English and Levantine Arabic. We need interpreters to be able to explain complex terms, for example around data protection and GDPR, and help us identify participant’s support needs. It will be a remote and ad hoc role that works flexibly around your own commitments.

The role will include:

  • On-call interpreting support to enable outreach to register participants onto our programme
  • Interpreting support to enable participants to access our sessions (currently delivered online)
  • Providing support to our facilitators during online sessions when necessary (currently delivered online)

As the project develops and Covid-19 restrictions ease, this role may develop to support other activities, including:

  • Supporting the IMPACT team to engage potential participants
  • Continuing to provide interpreting support for participants to access our programme
  • Supporting the delivery of English, Employment and Create sessions

The successful candidate should:

  • Have fluency in English and Levantine Arabic
  • Be available for approximately 4 hours a week for a period of up to 6 months. These 4 hours can be spread across the week, depending on your availability and the needs of our participants
  • Have access to a smart phone and WiFi to be able to provide virtual support
  • Some interpretation experience (preferred but not essential), whether in the community or professionally
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Have an understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding and data protection protocols
  • Have cultural awareness and a commitment to professional boundaries
  • Be able to work effectively as part of the team
  • Be able to work virtually until the Covid-19 restrictions are fully removed
  • Be able to start as soon as possible
  • If successful, you will undergo a DBS and reference check

This volunteering role with the Groundwork community team will allow you to gain experience in:

  • Working as part of a diverse and busy project delivery team
  • Developing delivery skills and interpreting skills
  • Working in an online community setting (this is likely to develop into a face to face setting after restrictions ease)
  • Delivering projects which benefit you and your community

We will provide:

  • A full induction, support and supervision throughout your volunteering period
  • A work reference upon request
  • Potential training opportunities, for example, Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, Child Safeguarding, etc
