Working within the Department of Applied Sciences (DAS), the Associate Professor of Food Systems will enhance our growing reputation within the field of food systems research. This is a key research field for the Department and UWE which aligns to the university research beacons of Health and Wellbeing; Sustainability by Design, UWE Strategy 2030, and addresses key global challenges. This post will provide the strategic research leadership in Food Systems across DAS and the Centre for Research in Biosciences (CRIB) enhancing internal and external collaborations. The Associate Professor will also support the academic development and delivery of our growing portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. This is a fulltime permanent post.
DAS has a long-term excellent reputation in delivering research with impact in the agri-food sector. This is demonstrated by our established research in the areas of molecular plant sciences, diseases and crop production, development of novel sensing systems for monitoring food quality, extension of food shelf via novel antimicrobials, off-grid water treatment technologies, food quality and food spoilage, agri-tech, land use and wildlife conservation, and science communication of food waste, packaging and agricultural pollution. This new Associate Professor post will build upon and enhance these research strengths. Preference will be given to laboratory or field based researchers with a focus on sustainable food production and/or food security, food systems for healthy people, and/or the environmental impact of food systems.
Department of Applied Sciences
The Department runs a number of very successful high recruiting undergraduate and postgraduate science programmes that focus on the application of science and scientific solutions. The field of Food Systems is relevant to all our programmes. Aspects such as food supply, food safety, food and health, food security and sustainable food production, are integral to our programmes from conservation and environmental science through to biomedical and the forensic sciences. The Associate Professor in Food Systems will make a significant contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and will be responsible for overseeing input to our programmes and ensuring that content is innovative, contemporary and future facing.
