Aid Box Community ‘CONNECTIONS’ volunteer role

Aid Box Community provide sanctuary, support and supplies to refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol.  

Connections Volunteers help to alleviate isolation and loneliness by building a friendship. We will connect you with a refugee or person seeking asylum for friendship and signposting support over the phone throughout a 10 week program with the hope that a friendships will grow beyond the program. 

We are looking for dedicated and reliable volunteers to join our team. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about supporting refugees with time to spare who are friendly, empathic, like a chat, yet know when to listen. We are looking for individuals who have space in their lives for a new friend. We are particularly keen to welcome individuals from a diverse backgrounds and with additional languages. 

We will need you to commit to... 

  • Volunteering for a minimum of 10 weeks on ABCs Connections program
  • Attending a full induction and training program in October 2020 which will include:

    • Safeguarding training  
    • Keeping safe Boundaries and Vicarious Trauma Training  
    • Cultural Awareness and Diversity Training 
    • Mental Health First Aid Training 
    • Asylum in the UK Training 
  • Contacting your Friend twice a week via phone, what’s app or video call for a chat, provide friendship and signposting to support services where necessary.

  • Writing a short online report following interactions 

  • Being available at 10am on a Tuesday or Thursdays at 6.30pm for a volunteer support zoom meeting, weekly for 4 weeks and alternate weeks thereafter 

Support you will receive

  • Weekly supervision sessions via zoom 
  • Telephone support when needed

What we require from successful applicants:

We will require you to complete an BASIC ONLINE DBS check. This will be at a cost to you of £23. Please let us know in your application if you would find this fee difficult to pay.
