Who is this training for?

People in some form of leadership role within an organisation, could be a charity, sports group, men’s group, faith group, youth group - any group where people are involved, and particularly men.

Who are we?

Beyond Equality works with men and boys towards gender equality, inclusive communities, and healthier relationships. In our Bristol Community Leader Training, we will be providing our expertise in running workshops and helping teams to build more supportive and inclusive cultures, that we’ve been doing with thousands of people across the UK, in community, education, sporting and corporate sectors.

What will the training cover?

This half-day training will help you to identify what strengths and challenges exist within your group, and what actions you can take. This will take place in the form of a reflective plan through four modules:

1. Boundaries and communication - Recognising how individuals have differing levels of comfort in different contexts due to factors such as personality and cultural background. Exploring how we can ensure communication flows between different people who have different boundaries by being clear about what they are.

2. Consent - People often don’t express what they want because of social norms and power structures, which are internalised as thoughts and feelings, and instead tend to go along with things. This dynamic can lead to situations where a group doesn’t have a consent culture, which can ultimately lead to issues such as bullying and sexual harassment. Without a culture of consent, people don’t feel empowered to be their whole selves within a group.

3. Allyship and creating inclusion - Working on recognising the ways in which broader social structures play out in the lives of the people you work with. How can you be attentive to the various privileges and areas of discrimination that show up differently for people within your group? How can we remove unseen cultural biases that we have? How can we directly tackle places where discrimination and prejudices affect the people you work with, both inside and outside of the group?

4. Support - Examining active listening and paying attention to ensure issues are heard and acknowledged. How to provide support as an organisation, or signpost where necessary. Looking at creating trust in organisational feedback structures and normalising giving and receiving feedback. How to create safe and anonymous places where people can raise issues when they arise.

The training will be followed by a social event for anyone who wishes to attend.
