The Role

Within this role, you will provide the board of trustees with the financial insight they require to make robust decisions and work closely with the CEO and Management team to help the organisation manage its finances effectively. You’ll enable the organisation to source and manage diverse income streams, creating and improving systems to facilitate further diversification and lead to better sustainability.  The role reports to the CEO and line manages one Finance Co-ordinator. 

Core responsibilities:

  • Operational management of finances; 
  • Oversee organisational financial management, ensuring that the charity is operating robust and efficient financial processes and procedures.
  • Support the CEO and budget holders with financial information.
  • Produce timely and accurate monthly management accounts, and financial information for funding applications and proposals.
  • Oversee the accounting systems, maintaining a nominal structure which enables simple and clear financial reporting, the sales and purchase ledger invoice system and bank accounts, ensuring regular bank reconciliations are performed.
  • Oversee the monthly payroll, liaising with the external service provider.
  • Liaise with banks and Auditors / Independent Examiners on financial matters.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and financial investment strategy; collation and accuracy of the consolidated forecasting, reporting on cash adequacy.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, for example, HMRC tax returns, VAT, corporation tax, Charity Commission, PAYE.
  • Manage BACS payments to suppliers.
  • Strategic management
  • Consider future systems requirements and recommend changes.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to Trustees, and annual accounts in line with all SORP and statutory requirements. Work with the CEO and Chair of Trustees to produce the annual report.
  • Prepare and manage returns to regulatory and statutory bodies and funders, with appropriate input from the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee and Auditor / Independent Examiners.
  • Consider, propose and develop opportunities for income generation and diversification, managing any finance-related services as appropriate.

The Candidate

  • The successful candidate will hold a suitable accountancy qualification or be QBE.
  • Demonstrable experience of working for a not for profit organisation in a finance management role.
  • Ability to report and present complex financial information in an accessible and people-focused way.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds and roles, with an understanding of political and cultural sensitivity.
  • Excellent self-motivation and the ability to use initiative and deliver tasks to deadlines.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to develop and motivate others.
  • High level of administrative competency and ICT literacy, including relevant finance software (for example, QuickBooks).

The Terms 

  • 21 hours per week, with Tuesday being a core day to work in the office. There is flexibility around when the other hours are worked, as long as they fall within usual business hours. Occasional evenings and weekends. 
  • This role will be based partly in the office in Bristol and partly remote. Tuesday is a core day to be in the office. 
  • A salary of £43,137 per annum FTE (£24,483 pro-rata).  
  • Employer pension contribution 7%
