A number of changes in children's services are taking place in Bristol.   Firstly, the plan for Bristol children’s centres is currently in the process of being implemented.  The cost reductions for children’s centres were agreed at the cabinet meeting in February 2017 following the 2016 budget consultation. Savings of £1.5 million need to be made for children’s centres.  The 22 children’s centres and Bristol City Council agreed a plan last year which included keeping all centres open.  Lead children’s centres were agreed in four areas of Bristol:

Spirit of 2012 has announced new development funding for two innovative projects that will empower girls and young women to change their communities for the benefit of other girls. UK Youth, alongside the British Red Cross and Young Women’s Trust, will use the funding to further develop an application for a full grant of up to £1.8m, working within communities to co-produce the project with girls and young women in their membership network.

Bristol’s Children and Families Partnership is developing a Bristol Children’s Charter which will set out the City’s commitment to children and young people and our pledge to children in the city.

The Children’s Charter is intended to complement existing strategies and initiatives. The Partnership’s  aim is for local organisations, businesses and communities to support the Charter and provide a focal point for activity that can bring about lasting change and support in our city across all aspects of children and young people’s lives.

In the wake of the Internet Safety Green Paper consultation, the Government has recognised a potential need to refresh legislation to align with the modern digital age. It has asked the Law Commission to review legislation around offensive communications to ensure it is up to date, and can be effectively applied to online communications. If the Commission finds there are gaps, it will commit to further work - which should eventually lead to reform.

Safer Internet Day 2018  is being celebrated globally on Tuesday 6 February 2018 with the slogan “Create, connect and share respect: a better internet starts with you”. The UK Safer Internet Centre has made available resources including education packs for schools, and parents and carers, and a series of films focussing on healthy online relationships and digital wellbeing.

If you need a basic check for a job in Scotland, then you should apply to Disclosure Scotland. If you want a check for personal reasons rather than work purposes, you should apply to the relevant organisation for your area – DBS if you live in England or Wales or Disclosure Scotland if you live in Scotland.
