Details of Role: 

We are looking for young people who can offer time and encouragement to young people who are going through hardship crisis and trying to access advice, information and support. You will support other young people to access information via websites, written resources and phone lines.

Purpose of the role

To support service users at the Ask Us drop in session with the following;

  • How to look for information relating to their enquiry
  • Help to collect and record resources and accurate useful information
  • Explaining and interpreting information in a way they can understand
  • Help to break down tasks into manageable steps

To provide information about Avon Bristol Law Centre, 1625 Independent People, Citizens Advice Bristol and other local advice services to clients from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures.

To enable service users to develop the skills and confidence they need to look for information effectively from reputable online sources and use this to increase service user’s knowledge around their rights and responsibilities.

Main duties and responsibilities may include

  • Explaining the Ask Us service to service users and welcoming new service users
  • Supporting service users with using computers to apply for online application forms e.g. Universal Credit, complaints and checking the status of live benefit claims.
  • Helping service users to identify the correct information, self-help resource or service provider
  • Recording client numbers and issues they have
  • Identifying when service users need to be referred to Ask Us workers
  • Supporting outreach, encouraging new young people to attend the drop in and get involved in campaigning around the issues that affect them

Personal skills and qualities

We particularly encourage young people aged 16-25 who have experienced hardship themselves, including (but not limited to) debt, housing, family estrangement and benefits issues.

  • Competence in using IT to complete forms
  • Ability to offer help appropriately and sensitively in a public environment
  • An understanding of why confidentiality is important.
  • Good communication skills
  • Being open, approachable and empathetic towards young people going through hardship
  • Respect for views, values and cultures that are different from your own
  • A commitment to the aims and principles of the Ask Us service
  • A positive attitude to self-development and assessment
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to recognise the limits and boundaries of the role

  • We will provide you with bespoke training. This will include how to work sensitively, supportively and safely with young people experiencing hardship and how to identify and use accurate information and advice resources
  • Full induction, regular support and supervision
  • Travel expenses (Inc. Mileage where needed), free tea/coffees at offices etc.
  • We will keep a record of your achievements to support you into education and employment
  • Access to further training opportunities
  • We are exploring the option of offering accreditation for volunteering


Ask Us Drop In is Thursdays 2pm-4pm at Bristol Youth MAPS on Nelson Street in Bristol City Centre.

The role will require you to stay after 4pm to make sure that the help you provide service users with is properly recorded.

There are opportunities to volunteer at additional times to support other Ask Us project aims- please enquire if you are interested.
