The Society of Merchant Venturers charity has a range of grants available to organisations that benefit people in the greater Bristol area. Grants are typically between £500-5,000.

Local Trusts and Foundations don’t always have the largest amounts to give, but making and keeping a good relationship with them is a key part of a sustainable grants strategy. They are also more likely to give grants quickly and to respond positively to the local concerns and needs that might be hard to get across to national organisations.

Grants are available to support schools and registered charities that wish to undertake educational work with children and young people in disadvantaged areas. The British & Foreign Schools Society (BFSS) normally makes grants for educational projects totalling about £600,000 in any one year.

The Bristol Impact Fund small grants programme will soon launch its second round of funding, for projects that reduce the city’s inequalities. Grants will last two years, and will be awarded by Bristol City Council, up to the value of £20,000 (to be confirmed).

Small charities and not-for-profit organisations working with disadvantaged people and communities in Gloucestershire (including Bristol and South Gloucestershire can apply for grants of between £500 and £20,000. The funding is being made available through the Henry Smith Charity’s County Grants scheme. Projects can last between 1 and 3 years and to be eligible the applicant organisation need to have a turnover of up to £250,000 (up to £1m if activities are county-wide). Applications can be submitted at any time.
