The Year of Can Do 2020: Inspiring community kindness in Bristol

Bristol City Council and a range of organisations from the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector have teamed up to make 2020 the Year of Can Do - a year-long programme inspiring community involvement and acts of kindness across the city.

Knowle West Media Centre, Link Age, Up Our Street and Voscur are amongst the organisations involved in shaping the Year of Can Do. 

Activities will be organised and promoted through the Can Do Bristol online platform.

Power to Change has published its fifth annual report on the community business market in England.

It uses a refined methodology and the most accurate data to describe the structure, size and shape of the community business market in 2019 and considers the outlook for the year ahead.

Report provides snapshot of common good land use in England

Land use think tank, Shared Assets, has released new research which aims to provide a detailed snapshot of common good land use in England.

Shared Assets is a social enterprise think and do tank that promotes land management for the common good, rather than personal gain.

The group estimates that there are 900 of these groups in the UK and the report maps their activities, as well as their structures and needs.

Land use think tank, Shared Assets, offers a range of different resources to support people and community groups that manage land for the common good.

These range from interactive toolkits on tenure models for community or land based enterprises, to written guides on growing food in parks, as well as various reports and research.

Public Meeting: Windmill Pub as a Community Asset

 

The Windmill Pub, in Windmill Hill, which has been for sale since March 2019, may be turned into flats if a buyer cannot be found by March 2020. However, there is a possibility that local people could take on the pub as a Community Asset.

This public meeting, open to everyone, will discuss the options available to the pub, led by local residents who have organised the campaign to save it. 

The meeting is an opportunity to share your views and hear more about the options for Community Asset funding.

Rare opportunity for Community Asset Transfer: former toilets in Avonmouth

A block of disused public toilets in Avonmouth is available for Community Asset Transfer (CAT) bids, where community groups have the chance to manage and run a property to benefit local people.

The toilet building, at the edge of Avonmouth Park on Avonmouth Road, is a single-storey unit with a tiled roof, built some time between 1905 and 1910. It has been vacant since 2005, and the freehold is owned by Bristol City Council.
